The earliest references to writing in the OT are from the time of Moses, in the book of Exodus. “Then Yahweh said to Moses, ‘Write this in a scroll as a memorial, and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven‘” (Ex 17:14). “And when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, he gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God” (Ex 31:18).
